“And he’s been with you the past two hours?” the policeman asked for the second time. He had a sandpaper-rough complexion and graying hair. His eyes were a watery light blue, and squinted suspiciously.

“Yes, sir,” Eddy said, wearing his most sincere expression. “We were discussing some work my brother’s car needed over burgers. Jimmy was telling me about a road trip he and Jack took in that car.”

“To Rochester,” Jimmy said, smiling at the memory. “To watch a baseball game. The Red Wings were playing the Buffalo Bisons. Jack and Eddy’s cousin was playing second base that day.”

“That was before Carl got arrested,” Eddy said with a sad frown.

“Unh hunh.” The watery light blues kept on squinting. “So, you were nowhere near the garage at eight o’clock?”

“No sir. We were at Mack’s Diner. You can ask Everett, he was working the grill. Tammy was waiting tables. I’m sure they’d remember us.”

Everett was one of Jimmy’s crew, while Tammy was an ex-girlfriend that Jimmy was still, inexplicably, tight with. Both could be relied upon to back up Jimmy’s alibi.

The officer continued to squint for a few seconds, then sighed and put away his notebook. “Alright, then. You’re free to go. Just don’t leave town until we get back in touch with you.”

“Of course not,” Jimmy agreed easily. “I know the drill. I just hope you can catch whoever did this. Oscar was a good guy.”

The policeman snorted derisively. Oscar Howard was known to be anything but a “good guy.”

“What about my brother’s car?” Eddy asked anxiously. “It was in the garage for repairs.”

The policeman shook his head. “Sorry, son. It’ll probably wind up in the impound. With luck you may be able to pick it up in a couple of days.”

Eddy’s shoulders slumped. He felt his heart sink so hard that it might drop out of his chest and roll away.

From a distance, green fire flared behind glass eyes as a gigantic black shape watched from the shadows. Dried blood and clots of gore still encrusted one of its clawlike hands. The thing’s upper body turned slowly as it tracked the movements of the young men walking away from the police officer.

A silent voice whispered caution inside its metal skull.

“I owe you a solid,” Jimmy said earnestly, hands on Eddy’s shoulders. “You’re a friend, and I won’t forget that.”

Eddy nodded absently. His mind was racing, trying to find some way out of the disaster his night was becoming.

“That reminds me,” Jimmy said with a start. He fished around in his pants pocket until he came up with something. “Any idea what this is?” He handed Eddy a thin metal wafer, a little bigger than a poker chip. It was made of some silverish metal, shiny as chrome, and had thin crisscrossing lines of green etched into it. The green hash-marks seemed to sparkle under the street lamp, as if green sparks crawled along the surface.

“Never saw it before,” Eddy replied, frowning.

“Well, it came out of a dent in the trunk of Jack’s car.
